Audi and GridCars join forces to add 70 new EV charge points to the South African grid

Including a selection of ultra-fast 150 kW stations.

As part of a commitment towards the steady introduction of premium all-electric products into the market in the coming years, Audi South Africa in collaboration with GridCars has unveiled a total of 33 new electric vehicle charging stations at strategic locations around the country.

Adding a total of 70 new points (two per station, depending on the location) to South Africa's ever-expanding grid, the headline news is that four of these new stations are of the "ultra-fast" 150 kW DC variety. Activating one of these outlets has the potential to unlock up to 350 km worth of driving range from a modern EV in just 30-minutes. As with the more than 250 other stations already available in South Africa , these new Audi-branded outlets are completely universal and will accommodate any modern electric/plug-in hybrid vehicle - each station activated via an owner-linked smart card.

"Audi is committed to ensuring that customers of any electric vehicle can comfortably travel the country, with the reassurance that the EV charging infrastructure is in place to support their progressive choice in mobility," says Sascha Sauer, Head of Audi South Africa. "With the Audi public EV chargers now formally in operation and available, our project in ensuring that there are active, state-of-the-art EV chargers at key destination and lifestyle venues across South Africa, is tracking well. We are excited to officially encourage all early adopters of electric mobility to utilize these charge points. This is a huge encouragement towards the adoption of EVs in South Africa as it's a positive indication towards a growing public EV charging network."

Complementing the 150 kW stations sited on the N1 in Colesburg, just off the N2 in Mosselbay, at Tugela North on the N3 and in Riversdale on the N4, are five additional 80 kW "fast" outlets. These can be found in Ventersburg (N1), Richmont (N1), The Crags (N2), Tugela South (N3) and Alzu Petroport (N4).

New 22 kW dual (AC) charging stations, enabling up to 100 KM in around one hour are located at lifestyle and destination venues as follows:
